The problem with writing a play about absence: How to fill the void? When a performance artist known as Miriam (Cynthia Nixon) vanishes in “The Seven Year Disappear,” a two-hander by Jordan Seavey that opened Monday at the Signature Center, we know only that she is a narcissist who steals the air from any room she enters. “The Whitney is mine,” she exclaims in the opening scene, after her adult son and manager, Naphtali (Taylor Trensch), informs her that the museum has made some sort of offer to Marina Abramovic. After seven years off the map, when Miriam returns, she has the gall to ask Naphtali whether he will help turn his abandonment into her next piece. Scenes following Miriam’s reappearance, which occurs on the heels of the 2016 election, are intercut with a reverse chronology of Naphtali’s search for her, which is really a quest to find himself — in a change of careers, a series of sexual liaisons and a lot of hard drugs.

CNN —The iconic tulle tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits of “Sex and the City” proved a star lot in an auction of “iconic” fashion pieces from film, TV and celebrity wardrobes on Thursday, selling for $52,000, more than four times its high estimate. The oyster-white, three-tier tutu skirt was expected to sell for $8,000-12,000, but drew 24 bids during a sale by Julien’s Auctions in California. The tutu “became a pop culture symbol,” according to the auction house, after Parker wore it in her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the smash-hit HBO TV series. The tutu also made an appearance in the 2008 “Sex and the City” movie, in a scene in which Carrie is clearing out her closet and deciding whether to keep certain outfits. The piece was sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by Field.

LONDON (AP) — British filmmaker Terence Davies, best known for a pair of powerful, lyrical movies inspired by his childhood in postwar Liverpool, has died at the age of 77. Davies’ manager John Taylor said the director died “peacefully at home in his sleep” on Saturday after a short illness. After making several short films, Davies made his feature debut as writer-director in 1988 with “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” a dreamlike — sometimes nightmarish — collage of a film that evoked a childhood of poverty and violence leavened by music and movie magic. The film won the Cannes International Critics Prize in 1988, and in 2002 was voted the ninth-best film of the past 25 years by British film critics. The autobiographical films opened the door to bigger budgets and more mainstream films, still showcasing Davies' distinctive lyricism and often set in the 19th or early 20th centuries.

The network said that the show would be returning on Sept. 18 without written material that is “covered by the W.G.A. strike,” a similar approach to that taken by “The View,” which began airing episodes from its new season this month, circumventing union writers. Barrymore, who had stepped down as the host of the MTV Movie and TV Awards in May in solidarity with the striking Hollywood writers, was greeted by a wave of critical backlash online after the decision to go back on air. Representatives for Barrymore and her show did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Recent hosts include the author and TV host Padma Lakshmi, the author and comedian Phoebe Robinson, and actors like LeVar Burton, Nick Offerman and Cynthia Nixon.

This article contains spoilers for Episode 11 of the second season of “And Just Like That …”After 11 episodes of ball gowns and bucket hats, questionable Met Gala looks and so much plaid, Season 2 of “And Just Like That …” has come to an end. In the season’s finale, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) hosts a soiree to say goodbye to her apartment. Most of her closest friends are there, except for Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), the “Sex and the City” fan favorite who finally appeared in a 75-second scene, to explain why she could not attend the party. In the episode, which forces reckonings between many of the show’s romantic pairings, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) wonders whether her relationship with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) was “a good train wreck” or simply a train wreck. This season, members of the Styles desk often asked similar questions about the show’s costumes, and ahead of the final episode, gathered to discuss Carrie’s kitten, Samantha’s return and whether the show’s ostentatious looks paid off.

When Giuseppe (Sebastiano Pigazzi) attends the political event for Herbert Wexley (Christopher Jackson), the poet embodies the role of the polished artist in a blazer and vest. Ahead of Episode 9, members of The New York Times’s Styles desk discussed the colors, undergarments and pet portraits in the latest installment of the series. CNN —Chris Noth has given his first interview regarding the sexual abuse allegations made against him in 2021. “I strayed on my wife, and it’s devastating to her and not a very pretty picture,” he said during the interview. The women said Noth reprising his role as Mr. Big in the Max series “And Just Like That…” motivated them to come forward. I don’t know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women,” Noth said in a statement to CNN at the time. According to USA Today, Noth, who was also dropped from a Peloton ad he starred in, lost a $12 million deal with his tequila company.

There’s Nothing Itsy About This Bitsy

Michael kept saying, “One of these days.”A couple years later, Bitsy was born, along with Nathan Lane’s character. Like Bitsy, you lost your husband, so the conversation with Carrie about grief at the salon presumably came from something of a real place. He also wanted Bitsy to be a little more than just a funny lady wearing fun clothes, skipping in and out of the girls’ lives. Then, a few scenes later, Bitsy sends Carrie the penis picture while Gloria Steinem is speaking. I’m telling you, there would be a lot fewer wars in the world if people were more sexually satisfied.

CNN —I am going to say the quiet part out loud: some people very much enjoy drama. Talk Samantha Irby Says It’s OK to Hate Your BodyAs far as descriptions of writers go, “humorist” has an old-fashioned, almost quaint ring to it, the literary equivalent of haberdasher or lamplighter. Maybe I was born too early to get on the “I don’t give a [expletive] if you see my legs” thing. I don’t know if this is controversial, but I don’t miss my parents. But I don’t know. I think I’m off the hook a little because my main target is myself, but the joke sensitivity is wild to me.
